Suppose Lex's upbringing had been far more abusive than we'd previously suspected. Then, after a life altering event, he turns his back on his father, finishes his education, and becomes a CSI lab tech in Metropolis. Clark Kent enters his life as a friend who wants to be something more, but before they can get to happily ever after the secrets of Lex's past come out into the present.
If you're thinking you've read this story, you may be right. But there are two versions of it. In one version Clark is a reporter doing a story on the Metropolis CSI lab, while in another version he is a fellow lab tech. "Holding out for a Hero" is a crossover bringing in characters from CSI Las Vegas, while "SuperGlue" is simply an AU version of the Smallville universe.
Both are novel-length angsty stories, with graphic details on Lex's past abuse. It's interesting to see the influence of having two different co-authors, when it's clear that both stories started from the same essential framework.
"Holding out for a hero" by Kat Reitz (Collaborative Evil) and Tzigane
