It's always a gamble when you read a work in progress. You read knowing that the author may abandon the story at any time, denying you a resolution to the story lines. Sometimes the updates are days apart, sometimes they stretch over months, so you have to reread the parts you'd read before, just to remember what the story is all about.
Sometimes the WiP posting serves as an extended beta session, and the story will morph as you read, as the author then goes back and changes plot lines, characters, and cleans up any mistakes.
It would be smart to read only stories that are finished, and to avoid WiPs. But sometimes you can't help it. Maybe the story is one like "The Mirror of Maybe" where the portion written is so strong it deserves to be read, even if the story is never finished.
Or maybe you are being treated to slices of a new story from your favorite author, and you just can't wait till she's finished to enjoy.
Or sometimes there is a story that everyone is talking about, so you have to start reading it to see what you're missing.
In that spirit, two recommendations for today:
The first is Pretty When You're Mine by Jenn. This is Smallville, featuring hard-living party scene Lex and hooker Clark. For me part of the fun of reading this story is to try and guess just where Lex and Clark's lives diverged from canon. Last spring she posted the first part, and then over the holidays she picked up the story and began posting new segments. You can read the story so far at http://seperis.illuminatedtext.com/smallville/pretty.html and follow updates in her livejournal

The second story is A Year Like None Other by Aspen in the Sunlight. This is an epic tale, that starts with Harry getting bad news from the Dursleys. Snape is assigned to escort Harry on a visit to his ailing aunt, and from there matters take a turn for the worse. I love her portrayal of Snape, and the evolution of his relationship with Harry. The story is Gen, with Snape eventually adopting Harry. You can find the story and the latest chapters in the archive like none other at: http://aalno.tauri.org/
